As someone who is a little adventurous, it was only a matter of time before I took my R1S for an overlanding trip. Before now, I've gone on a couple of overlanding trips with the Ford Bronco and the Jeep Wrangler, but with the R1S, it was my first time having such experience with an EV. So first off, an overlanding trip is simply a type of adventure travel, usually by vehicle, that involves you exploring remote areas while camping along the way. This form of adventure requires careful planning and also requires some adventure and maintenance skills in case you encounter some little issues along the way.

What makes a vehicle perfect for overlanding adventure, and is the Rivian R1S a good fit for such adventure?

First off, an overlanding vehicle is one that needs to have certain features and abilities. Such as

1. High ground clearance
2. suspension lift
3. Large tires
4. A good towing capacity of at least 5000 lbs
5. Should be a 4-Wheel Drive (4WD) or All-Wheel Drive (AWD) enabled vehicle.

These are some of the major features a vehicle needs to have for it to be able to go on an overland adventure trip.

How does the R1S compare to this?

The R1S is quite big in terms of size, and it offers one of the smoothest drives on both rough and smooth terrains.

Ground Clearance

In terms of ground clearance, a minimum of 8 inches is required for navigating through rough terrain, and the R1S has a whopping ground clearance of 14.4 inches. That's more than enough required to give you a smooth and comfortable ride through the rough terrain.

Tire Size

For tire size, it comes with a 34-inch diameter tire, which is quite large enough, and also, it's important to note that the tires can still be upgraded at any time.

Suspension

The R1S comes with a suspension lift of 1 inch, and the standard suspension lift for overlanding vehicles for a better experience is anywhere from 2 to 4 inches. The good part, though, is the fact that you can seek out aftermarket suspension lifts and get an upgrade for your R1S. Some aftermarket options for suspension lift upgrades include the Leitner Designs Lift Kit and Fox Suspension Lift Kit.

Towing Capacity

Having a pretty good towing capacity is also an essential feature for a vehicle that wants to be used for an overlanding trip. The R1S comes with a towing capacity of over 7500 lbs, and the minimum towing capacity for an overlanding vehicle is 5000 lbs and above. In other words, the R1S checks the box perfectly when it comes to towing capacity.

4WD or AWD models

The R1S comes in both the 4WD or AWD models for the quad-motor configuration, which provides it with exceptional traction and control over uneven terrains.

Overlanding Features

The R1S comes with some overlanding features like All-Terrain Mode, Rock Crawl Mode, and Conquer Mode. These different modes help for a better and smoother experience while driving on any terrain. You can also add some extra exterior modifications too, such as roof racks, light bars, skid plates, and fender flares for more comfort and a better overall trip experience.

Final Thoughts

So for my conclusion, I'd say that the R1S ticks all the right boxes and is a perfect SUV for an overlanding trip. Except for it's suspension lift, which can be upgraded seamlessly without any troubles.

I had a wonderful experience when I went on an overlanding trip with my R1S, and if you're thinking of going on such a trip, there's nothing for you to worry about as it's a vehicle that can handle the big occasions and one that guarantees you safety and an amazing experience too.
