Youtube has been one of my most used app for some weeks now. Everyday, I get to see videos of Rivian owners carrying out DIY fixes, explaining something I didn't understand before, making reviews of accessories, and so much more.
Was still on the app yesterday when I came across this video of how a Rivian owner had his Gen 2 R1S in the service center, and one of the issues he had them looking at was a rattle in the dash being caused by the heat pump. He described the heat pump as being very rumbly. Not terribly loud, but definitely audible in a way that calls attention to itself. In addition to the rumble every once in awhile it would start to rattle something in the dash. He said this was most noticeable in temperatures between 30 and 40. Even when it wasn't "rattling" he explained that you could still very much hear The rumble in the background. The first video is what the best pump noise sounded like before the fix.
So the techs found that the HVAC (refrigerant) lines were in contact with the bulkhead, and they moved them and secured them out of the way. Now, he was expecting the rumble to still be present, but the rattle to be gone. But much to his surprise even the rumble is mostly gone. From the outside of the vehicle to heat pump sounds about the same, but on the inside it's barely audible. He could still very much feel the vibration in the steering wheel and floor, he has to strain to hear the rumble over the fan, which is a huge improvement. Maybe this might be a widespread issue, but hopefully this helps others who are experiencing a rumbly heat pump.
The second video is what the heat pump sounds like after the fix, running in roughly similar conditions to the first video:
