I've noticed this a couple of times while using my R1S for some towing activities and well, I was hoping that rivian would find a solution but it appears as though Gen 2 R1T and R1S are not compatible with some EOH brake systems.
I have a Gen 2 R1S and used it to pull a nautique paragon 23 on a triple axle trailer with electric over hydraulic brakes. The brakes on the trailer have never communicated with the SUV. I was hoping it was a simple wiring issue on the trailer, even though they were never an issue with previous tow rig. The trailer has been looked over and that is not the issue. When plugging in the trailer, the lights come on and everything, indicators, brake lights etc work perfectly, the truck recognizes the trailer etc but there are no brakes. Being a roughly 10k pound trailer + boat setup I would very much have loved to have trailer brakes.
Someone adviced me to take the SUV to a SC, which I did. They looked it over and could not find any issues, they brought the SUV out to the trailer and tried to trouble shoot the issue with both. They determined that when moving from the Gen 1 to Gen 2 architecture, they went to digital fuse for the trailer pins and that when the trailer is connected for a brief milli second the pull of the hydraulic pump exceeds the set 40 amp limit on the digital fuse and then it shuts off power to the hot trailer pin.
They proceeded to inform me that the condition has been escalated for further review and that "potentially" there will be a software update in the future to correct the issue.
I was kind of bummed about that because who knows when/if they will ever get to that fix. This essentially means I wont be towing anything else anytime soon. Just wanted to give others with Gen 2s a heads up and like I said I'm not sure if this issue will apply to all EOH setups or if mine is unique!
