- 2023, Rivian R1T, white & Blue
I've had my R1T for a little over some time and my cross bars showed up yesterday via UPS.
They came in a nice overpack box and there is a very nice Rivian logoed box inside of that with the two cross bars.
On the outside of the Rivian logo box, make sure you look for the plastic sleeve that holds a small envelope with a pair of keys to lock the cross bars to the R1T.
the Rivian Logo box has the two cross bars nested inside and the cross bars are fully covered with bubble wrap and the mounting posts on the cross bars are covered with nice cardboard covers.
The cross bars come with a total of 3 keys, the two with black plastic covers in the outer bag on the Rivian logoed box and 1 plain key inside the box. They look like this.
One thing the Rivian Brooklyn service center and I learned the hard way today is that these keys are apparently "real" keys and Rivian doesn't keep masters at their service centers. I dropped my R1T off this morning with only a wallet key to have the gen 1 tonneau cover replaced (more on that later) and the service center called me back a few hours later saying can we meet you half way to get the cross bar keys from you. I asked if they had master keys and they said they just learned they don't .It was very nice of Mike from the service center to meet me about 30 minutes from my hours and 1.5 hours from the service center to get the cross bar keys from me.
On with the rest of the install. For each cross bar, lift up on the latch on both ends of the bar and then ideally using 2 people, bring the bars over the bed from the back of the R1T. You need to have the latching "tang" on the cross bar clamps open so they will fit over the cleats on the R1T bed rails.
When the cross bar clamps click down onto the bed rail cleat, you should hear two clicks and be able to fully close the latch on both sides. If you can't, then you may need to wiggle the cross bar clamps around until you get a positive lock. You'll be able to tell you have a good connection because the cross bar won't be loose on the bed rail cleat when it's properly seated. It took me a couple of tries on 2 of the 4 cross bar clamps.
The latch handles can then be closed down over the locks and your cross bars are installed. The process on the roof of your Rivian is very similar. The Brooklyn service service center told me they've already had several cases of people smashing their glass roofs by trying to install cross bars by themselves on the roof, so don't make that mistake and ask family or a friend to help.
I don't have any accessories for my Rivian cross bars just yet since I wasn't sure when they would arrive. The cross bars seem to be well made and its great that so many products already on the market will work in the T slot system these cross bars have.
There is an instruction manual for the cross bars and it's worth taking a quick look at for some installation tips. That said, the cross bars really are intuitive and easy to install. My son and I installed both of them on the bed in less than 5 minutes including unpacking them.
