- 2025 R1S DMPL
Rivian’s gearing up to launch the R2, a more affordable, compact electric SUV set to drop in the second half of this decade. They’ve just partnered with LG Energy Solution (LGES) to power the R2 with new high-capacity 4695 cylindrical battery cells. These will offer six times the capacity of the current 2170 cells, meaning better range (300+ miles) and efficiency. Production is expected to kick off in 2026, with batteries made in Arizona and shipped to Rivian’s Illinois plant.
Starting at $45,000, the R2 is positioned to take on Tesla’s Model Y, Hyundai Ioniq 5, and others in the same bracket. It's loaded with cool tech like zonal architecture, haptic steering controls, and native compatibility with Tesla’s NACS charging connector for easy access to fast chargers. Rivian also has smaller R3 models in the works, which could affect demand for the R2. Pre-orders already hit 100,000 by July, so there's strong interest, but it'll be interesting to see if the hype holds or shifts to the R3 lineup.
