Since the introduction of the Google Cast feature for Rivian, I've seen some owners complain about the feature not being useful. However, I believe it's an edge-case feature that's more common than other features, like using an air compressor. Given the vehicle's existing connectivity and large screen, it's worth having for those specific cases.
I mean, technically, for every person who sees a feature as an edge-case, there's likely another person who sees it as a main need, right? For instance, some people schedule their car's climate daily to warm it up or cool it down from extreme temperatures. However, for someone living in San Diego, this feature might seem unnecessary.
In addition to the obvious use case of watching a show while charging, here are some other scenarios where Google Cast comes in handy (at least in my family):
1. Waiting for kids to finish school activities, sports, or theater (which always seem to take longer than expected).
2. Keeping kids entertained while charging, at a rest stop, getting food, or running errands.
3. Watching content while eating in a parking lot (e.g., at a ski resort, rest stop, or after a hike).
4. As a treat while glamping or car camping, letting kids watch a movie before bedtime.
While handheld tablets could cover these scenarios, the fact that the screen is already there makes Google Cast a convenient feature. I wish they would allow its use while driving (imagine having a crackling fireplace on a winter road trip!), but I understand the liability concerns and the need for drivers to keep their eyes on the road.
Overall, it's a useful feature, and I hope it stays available for the long run.
