Carrying out a resst for your Rivian is one of the most basic knowledge you can have as a Rivian owner. Such knowledge comes in very handy in various situations you can find yourself.
Basically, there are 2 kinds of resets that people do on their Rivians. Often called soft resets and hard resets.
In the world of tech typically a soft reset is "graceful". It's where you use the device's interface to select the "reboot" option. A hard reset on the other hand is typically what you use when a device becomes unresponsive and is not capable of going through its shutdown routine on its own. Think pushing and holding the power button on your laptop until the screen goes black or pulling the power cord.
In the case of Rivian neither type of reset is a "hard" reset. One reboots just the infotainment screen, the other reboots all the other modules too. In the owners manual they're referred to as "software" and "vehicle" reboots:
To carry out the soft reset; press and hold the volume down button and power button simultaneously for about 5 to 10 seconds. Once the screen goes blank and starts to flicker, your reboot process has started.
To carry out the hard reset; turn off your car and then press and hold the volume down button and the power button simultaneously for 10 to 15 seconds and then wait for the system to restart.
So basically, it's the same process to carry out both the soft and hard reset. Main difference is the timing. It's not a difficult process to carry out and one you can basically do on your own anytime anywhere.
