Ever since my last software update, I've been paying close attention to performance the last few days, and I think I've had a few epiphanies as to why performance is (at times) so poor on the infotainment computer. But first a bit of context:

Some may have noticed that the map app is generally very poor performing. Lots of lag when pinching, dragging, etc if anything else is happening at the same time. Especially if you're in the satellite view. Someone noted that if he has a route in the nav, his performance suffers greatly. I've noticed that if I have the map up in the diver's display things also tend to slow down a bit, generally.

So here's where things get weird with the blind spot camera. I've noticed that things really start to suffer when the turn signal camera is up. If you try to interact with the center screen frames start dropping like crazy, the 3d visualizer starts dropping frames, and things just move very slowly in general. But I've had an insight into why this might be the case.

Yesterday on the way back from an event, I had the music widget in the driver's display up. When I was merging on to the freeway. There was some weird glitch were the widget on the left was a map on the left half, and the camera view on the right half of the widget box. Then later in the evening, I saw another glitch. This time, the camera itself just disappeared and the map widget was there instead (highlighted in red when there was a person in my blind spot).

While all of this was happening the 3d visualizer was dropping frames like crazy. 10-15FPS if I had to guess. As soon as I let go of the turn signal, it went back to the music widget and it was performing normally. But here's where it gets weird. later, when I was getting off of the freeway, using the right turn signal there was no performance hit at all. The camera view popped right up, and the 3d visuals were perfect with no frames dropped.

Remember how I mentioned performance suffers when the map widget is up? Well it seems that for some strange reason, the blind spot camera always launches the map widget behind it. No wonder performance starts to suffer when you do that!

Very strange that it would do that. Good news though - it seems that would be a relatively easy performance uplift to fix.

Side Note - All of these observations are on a Gen 2 vehicle. The infotainment computer is mostly the same between generations, but there may be slight behavior differences between the 2.
