As a Gen 1 owner, I’ve been diving into the details of how our Driver+ system compares to the new Rivian Autonomy Platform (RAP) you’re getting with Gen 2 vehicles. There’s been some confusion about what these terms mean, especially with Rivian tossing around different labels. So the aim of this thread is to break down the differences in a way that’s hopefully crystal clear, based on my experience with my Gen 1 and what I’ve learned about the Gen 2 vehicles.

1. Driver+ vs. Rivian Autonomy Platform: What’s the Deal?

Let’s start with the basics. If you’ve got a Gen 1 Rivian like me, your vehicle runs on the Driver+ system. This is the catch-all name for the suite of safety and semi-autonomous features in our cars. For you Gen 2 owners, your equivalent is called the Rivian Autonomy Platform (RAP). Think of these as umbrella terms that cover all the tech using cameras, radar, and sensors to make driving safer and easier. Check your infotainment screen under the “Driver Assistance” menu: Gen 1 shows “Driver+,” while Gen 2 displays “Rivian Autonomy Platform+” (more on that “plus” in a bit).

2. What Features Fall Under Driver+ and RAP?

Both systems include a bunch of features that rely on your vehicle’s sensors, cameras, and radar. I won’t bore you with an exhaustive list, but here are some highlights you’ll find in both Driver+ (Gen 1) and RAP (Gen 2):

i. Highway Assist: Helps keep you centered in your lane and maintains a safe distance from the car in front.

ii. Blind Spot Monitoring: Alerts you to vehicles lurking in your blind spots.

iii. Lane Change Assist: Those handy blind-spot camera feeds that pop up when you signal.

iv. Automatic High Beams: Adjusts your headlights for better visibility without dazzling other drivers.

Basically, if it involves your Rivian “seeing” or “sensing” the world around it, it’s part of these systems.

3. RAP vs. RAP+: What’s the Difference for Gen 2 Owners?

Now, here’s where things get interesting for you Gen 2 folks. Rivian’s introducing a subscription model for some advanced features, similar to their Connect+ package. The upgraded version is called Rivian Autonomy Platform+ (RAP+), and it locks certain premium features behind a paywall. As of now, these include:

i. Lane Change on Command: Automatic lane changes when you signal (pretty slick!).

ii. Enhanced Highway Assist: A hands-free mode for smoother highway cruising.

iii. Driving Comfort Assist: A not-yet-released feature that adjusts your position (like scooting over for big trucks).

Without the RAP+ subscription, your Gen 2 vehicle still gets the standard RAP features, which are included for free. The good news is that the core features like basic Highway Assist won’t be paywalled, so you’ll still have a solid set of tools without spending extra. For us Gen 1 owners, none of these subscription-based features apply—our Driver+ system is what it is, no paywall required. In a way, unsubscribed Gen 2 vehicles will operate similarly to Gen 1 in terms of features, but you’ll benefit from Gen 2’s upgraded hardware, making the system smoother and smarter.

Rivian’s shared a helpful chart that lays out the full breakdown of RAP vs. RAP+ features. It’s worth a look if you want the nitty-gritty details. You can check their official site or owner resources for it.

I hope this clears things up for you Gen 2 owners. As a Gen 1 driver, I’d say I'm a bit jealous of your upgraded hardware, but I’m happy to share what I’ve learned to help you navigate your new system. Drop any questions below, and let’s keep the Rivian community growing.
