- 2024 Rivian R1S
With all the hype around the upcoming R2, I’m curious to see if the R3 will be able to capture some of R2’s market. Obviously, they target different segments of the EV market, but just how distinctive are they? Did some research so you don't have to:
Size and Market:
R2 is a mid-sized SUV, comparable in dimensions to the Tesla Model Y. The R3 is smaller, an "entry-level" EV with a modern SUV design. Goes without saying that the R2 is built on a more robust platform.
Price Range
Starting price of R2 is $45,000, while the R3 is expected to be cheaper, although Rivian has yet to reveal a starting price.
Performance
R2 will offer single to tri-motor configurations. The top tri-motor setup can achieve 0-60 mph in under 3 seconds and offers approximately 300 miles of range. R3’s highest-performing variant is also capable of 0-60 mph in about 3 seconds so it seems in this respect, both EVs offer similar performance.
Features
R2 offers adventure-centered features like a roll-down rear window, a vast frunk, and folding rear seats that can be flattened, convenient for camping trips.
R3 utilizes recycled materials in its design which partly explains its affordability.
Off-roading Capability
This is where the R2 shines. It has a significantly more robust build than the R3 and higher ground clearance. Not to say that the R3 can’t be used for off-roading adventures. It does have some capacity to navigate off-road terrains but for more demanding terrains, the R2 is much more capable.
Conclusion:
Customers looking for an EV that delivers a well-rounded, mid-sized SUV experience for adventurous lifestyles will most likely go with the R2. For customers with a tighter budget seeking maximum value, the R3 will be more appealing. Both models look like they’ll deliver high performance, and reflect Rivian’s brand identity- sustainability and cutting-edge features.
