Charging Summary For A New Rivian R1S Owner

Ever since I got my R1S, I've noticed that the battery range estimation hasn't been the best. Driving a Tesla for the last 3 years, it never had this kind of issue. During my last trip, the driver display shows 255mi remaining. My total trip (including 2 destinations) is 160mi so I believed I should be able to make it easily with a nice cushion. But the center display showed that I would arrive at first destination with 4mi remaining, and run out before the second destination! I knew this was false so I made the drive anyway, and arrived at second destination with 50mi remaining. If I understand correctly, the driver display range is simply the total rated range multiplied by SOC. That makes sense here, since my vehicle is rated for 370mi, 255mi is 68.9%. Coming from Tesla, I expect the number shown in the center display should account for factors like elevation, wind, traffic speed, etc. It's sad that my own mental estimation is better than Rivian's.

I've had my R1S for almost 2 weeks now after owning a Model 3 and Model X. Tesla charging quite simple, so I’m trying to wrap my head around my options in the Rivian (at least until the NACS adapters ship and I can get back to life at Superchargers).

From what I’ve read, the priority order (ease and cost) of charging a Rivian is:

1. Tesla Superchargers (magic dock for now; adapters in the future). Cost variable depending on membership, but from $0.19-0.35 per kWh. Still trying to find non-Tesla pricing.

2. Rivian Adventure Network (RAN)

3. Other options (Electrify America, EVgo, Chargepoint). No idea on pricing, but really don’t want to have to worry about these options as my experience in the past has been they are slow, costly, and half the time don’t work reliable. Haven’t tried them in years, so maybe they’ve improved?

I’m planning on mostly home charging via my Tesla mobile charger plugged into a NEMA 14-50 with a NACS-CSS adapter. My service center is 3hr drive from my house, so need an idea of how to charge in the road home if I’m not fully charged at pick up. Thanks and any insight is appreciated!
