I wanted to share my experience with a great set of tire deflators.
Would be great for anyone who's getting prepared for a trip anytime soon. So I bought a set of #BoulderTools deflators. The kit comes with a pressure gauge as well as extra inserts and basic tools. The chrome extra valve caps came in really handy…more on that later.
Was told I was going to cross thread my valve stems. I scoffed at his admonishment and set about setting the deflators for the recommended 34 psi.
“Ha! I wonder what they're talking about, these are fine,” I said to myself after fitting them on in my driveway several times to adjust the setting.
It has been years since I cross threaded a bolt or nut. I once used to teach high schoolers, who are not known to take their time and make sure that the threads are meshed before cranking away with a tool…and then I would teach them how to fix the threads when they inevitably fail and destroy a set of threads. All part of the process…
So with my confidence, or as we will find out hubris, I'm on the road and I stopped on the side of the trail to air down. I take my time and only use my fingers to start and tighten the deflators onto the valve stems.
Let’s take a moment and wonder at the gain of milage. Silent Adventure vehicles, that a few tenths of an ounce of saving using ALUMINIUM valve stems give us! It surely must be a ten-thousandth of a mile per kilowatt improvement (if you know your sig figs you will know what I mean)!
Anyway, the thin, fine ALUMINUM thread was no match for the butter soft brass fitting on the deflator and I ended up, cross threading two of the four valve stems…I didn’t event feel it happening. I received my fantastic set of quick connects to never ever have to thread anything other than the plastic valve cap back onto these cross threading supper mailable ALUMINIUM valve stems on my R1S!
Oh, and you definitely can not fit a normal die into the wheels to fix the cross threading. However the chrome valve stem caps do the work nicely. I have nice new, functional, never to be touched ever again valve stem threads.
Now you all can enjoy the high pitched sound of escaping air without having to swear like a drunken airplane mechanic….Stay Adventurous!
