I've noticed that many R1T owners tend to overlook their spare tire compartment, which I believe is not ideal. The spare tire bay does not drain completely and should be checked regularly to prevent rotting debris or, worse still, a tire that's soaking wet after rain or cleaning with water.
My friend recently checked his spare tire bay on Saturday after driving through a swamp, and to his surprise, he found stagnant water that the tire had been sitting in. He took a picture to gauge the depth of the water, using the retention rod as a reference point. As expected, given the swampy conditions, there was evidence of growth and debris accumulation.
When he pulled out the fifth tire and wheel, he found bits of debris stuck to it. To clean it up, he used a sponge and some towels to remove the remaining water. I advised him to regularly wash out the bed to prevent water accumulation in the future.
In California, the water might eventually evaporate, but I'm glad he had it checked, as the smell was quite unpleasant.
