Sorry for not doing this sooner…

For those of you who are curious what to do in case of a natural disaster like a Hurricane, I thought I would post a few tips that I have used to ensure a great EV-owning experience.

If you plan on hunkering down;

1. Charge to 100%

2. If you have an R1T or R1S and park it outside, run an extension cord from the bed, under the tires (so it can't go anywhere) and into the garage. If we lose power, I plug in my freezer in the garage and can run an extension cord from the fridge in the house

3. Turn on the Inverter for at least 1 day (3 days is Max setting).

4. Remember also, that some of the items you have plugged in could overlap like a fridge and freezer but that they don’t stay on…the compressors for each will kick on and off throughout

5. If you have any solar generators like the EcoFlow Delta 2 Max that we have, also charge those to 100%. We have the additional 2 Smart Batteries taking their total output to 6kWh

6. Stage those in an area of the house where they are easy to access. They are great for charging fans, phones, running the fridge, coffee maker, wired fans etc.

7. Check your elevation and potential for flooding

We live in Jacksonville, FL and even though it’s on the east coast of Florida we are still over seven miles from a finger of the St. Johns River and over 28 miles to the Atlantic Ocean. We are at 89’ ASL (above sea level).

If you plan on evacuating:

1. Ensure you charge to 100%

2. If you have a NACS adapter, ensure you have your filters on your Rivian Navigation setup correctly

3. Ensure Tesla is selected as a network you want to patronize

4. Hide “Incompatible” and un-hide “Adapter Required”

5. Create a PlugShare account AND A Better Route Planner account and map your route

6. Ensure you have a route planned and that it is executable

7. Go far enough away that power outages aren’t going to keep you from charging your R1

8. Just because the hotel has electricity doesn’t mean that the L2 chargers at the hotel have power

9. Remember that if your route has power outages, your return trip could be impassable until power is restored

10. When in doubt, stay an extra day or two where you have electricity, A/C, and food

I think that about covers it. This is something I should have done sooner before Helene and Milton hit. So I really hope this can help someone else in the future. My thoughts and prayers to everyone that was affected by the Helene and Milton hurricanes.
