I was on the freeway in no particularly harsh conditions on Tuesday, when both screens (and I believe the fans/AC although I was a little stressed so I'm not certain) went dead spontaneously. It was surprisingly unnerving for everything to go dark and quiet.
But, the interesting and good part is apparently the car is engineered in such a way that none of the controls went dead (steering, acceleration). Before I arrived at the next exit the system had begun to come back online starting with a white screen with the mph displayed. Within a minute, everything was back on and playing Spotify at the exact spot in the song that it went dead.
I thought I'd mention it here in case anyone knows this phenomenon to be a harbinger of bad things to come, and/or just to be grateful that the car didn't just roll to a stop in the fast lane.
Someone from our Rivian club said he experienced a spontaneous Infotainment system reboot happen to him last year and just like my own experience, it was unnerving for sure, but driving was unaffected. I don't know what a full vehicle reboot would do to propulsion, steering and braking if it happened while I were at highway speed but my R1S shut down at 75 mph, coasted to the shoulder. Full system reboot and on the road again.
Lucky for me, there were no other issues and after doing a little research yesterday, I discovered that what I experienced was an Infotainment system reset vs a full vehicle reboot. I didn't see any major solution but hopefully, it doesn't snowball into something bigger in the future.
