Southern Nevada Off-Road Recovery (SNORR) is a non-profit organization with over 60 active volunteers available 24/7, servicing a 400-mile radius around Las Vegas. I was privileged to attend one of their sessions this week and their dedication and enthusiasm, recognized by local enforcement units, truly impressed me.
While I can’t capture all the valuable lessons from our four-hour session, I highly recommend checking out their courses and supporting their efforts. One day, we or someone we know might need their help.
Here are some important tips we learned:
1. Always have a working GMRS radio. In case of emergency, switch to channel 19. There’s a good chance someone will be listening and can assist.
2. Download the Safe-Xtract app. It offers tutorials on using recovery equipment safely.
3. Bookmark or download the What3Words app. This allows you to share your exact location with local authorities or friends in an emergency. It’s impressive and easy to use.
4. In case of emergency, before your phone battery dies, record a message for your voicemail with your location details. If you plan to move, mention that in your message.
5. When adventuring in the desert, always carry more water than you think you’ll need, bring medications for yourself and your pets, and inform someone of your planned route.
I want to express my gratitude to all the instructors for emphasizing the importance of preparation and knowing how to properly use the equipment we purchase. Even the best gear can become dangerous if misused.
We’re looking forward to more safety courses with SNORR so we can all enjoy our vehicles and the wilderness more safely. You can also visit their website https://snorr.vegas/ for more information.
