So I did a stereo upgrade on my R1S about 2 weeks ago. I have to say, this mod was well worth the money. I'm not sure the driving experience could have been improved, but this absolutely does it. The audio system is so much more dynamic now, whereas it felt a bit flat before. The stock highs and mids always did a great job, but now the system is balanced with strong low end performance. And, all still looks stock. I went with the JL 10/ 300w amp. My guy did an awesome job. This upgrade is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!
Completely stock look. He used the same stock enclosure, swapping out the existing sub for the new JL. There's an interesting side-by-side pic of the stock sub vs the new JL. When he took off the stock enclosure, he covered it and the wall behind it with matting. He installed a level control knob. Its way down in a lower panel, almost just above the accelerator pedal. I could have had it placed higher for better accessibility but didn't want to damage any of the more visible upper panels (just in case). But the knob is seamless, and almost hidden. It's not safely reachable while driving, which is ok. Just set it and forget it.
The major innovation most will be interested in is his amp mounting location. He heated up a piece of ABS to form it to the body/ frame behind the panel in the rear, to make a custom rack for the amp and line level converter. It's pretty cool what he did, I'll absolutely share pics of that when I get them
Another interesting thing he said he did is that he kept the stock amp wiring harness, and made the new amp plug & play. So if I ever wanted to return it to stock, it would be easy to do.
He said this was a fun project. I appreciate that he took the time to review all the links/ posts I sent him prior to doing mine. He said he has the template now, so other R1Ss will be super easy to do.
