For someone who has driven the Gen 1 R1S and Gen 2 R1S in soft and moderate settings, both driven on the freeway, I can say that there aren't a lot of differences between both, but the slight differences that they have are hugely significant and can be easily identified.

The major differences between both generations are such as

BATTERY

The max battery capacity for the Gen 2 R1S is 141.5 kWh, which is less than that of the Gen 1 that has a max pack of 149 kWh, and the Gen 2 max battery also weighs 33 kg less than that of the Gen 1 max battery. Despite this, the Gen 2 battery lasts longer and charges faster than that of the Gen 1.

EXTENDED DRIVING RANGE

With a fully charged battery, your Gen 2 R1S can go up to a whopping 410 miles. Suitable for long trips without having to worry too much about charging.

DOOR HANDLES

Gen 1 R1S doors are mechanical, while the Gen 2 doors have electronic handles, which is way cooler.

SOUND

One area where a huge difference can be spotted is the sound quality. When it comes to sound balance and surround sound settings, then Gen 1 is nowhere near Gen 2. Gen 2 sounds a LOT better with the balance back a few clicks. The Gen 2 system sounds a lot fuller, richer, and better balanced.

These are just to name a few differences between both generations. Also, both are equally quiet wind-noise-wise. But the Gen 2 rides a whole lot better. Gen 2 feels more fluid over harsh bumps, and there are fewer shudders through the chassis. Over tarmac with ripples and micro vibrations, you can feel them in Gen 1 but not at all in Gen 2. The Gen 1 gives the feeling of a very refined SUV, like a Lexus GX. Gen 2 feels more in the vein of a unibody, like a slightly rougher X5.
