The other day, I noticed my R1S wipers were starting to streak more than wipe. Which made me realize that it was time for a refresh. So, I swung by AutoZone to grab some replacements. After poking around the aisle for a bit, I picked up a pair: one 24-inch blade and one 18-inch, since that’s what fits. I went with the “J hook” style, which let me swap out the entire setup—blade, holder, everything—in one go.
It was pretty straightforward, just unclipping the old one and snapping the new one into place. I was done in about five minutes. But here’s where I hit a snag: I’m still scratching my head about how to replace just the rubber part without swapping the whole assembly. You know how some folks say it’s cheaper and greener to slide out the old rubber strip and pop in a fresh one?
Well, the instructions I’ve come across make it sound like a breeze—“just squeeze the end and pull it out.” Yeah, not so much. I squeezed, I tugged, I even muttered a few choice words under my breath, but that rubber wasn’t budging. Maybe I’m missing a trick, or maybe the clips on these OEM holders are just extra stubborn. Anyone else run into this?
For now, I stuck with replacing the whole unit—blade and body together. It works great, and honestly, the original holder design feels pretty solid compared to some of the flimsier aftermarket ones I’ve seen. Still, I can’t help but wonder if I’m overcomplicating things. The rubber-only refills are definitely easier on the wallet, so I’d love to figure out the secret sauce for swapping those instead. If you’ve cracked the code on this, please let me know how you did it. Thanks
